State of Relaxation
Did you know that massage therapy has been practiced since as far back as 3000 BCE?
Surprisingly, during my nursing school days in the early 1970s, the full benefits of whole-body massage were not emphasized. Instead, we were taught the basics of providing back massages to help patients relax before bedtime and invigorate them for the day ahead. Thinking on this, I can't help but wonder how my career path might have differed had I recognized then the profound importance of massage therapy. It's a reminder embracing holistic practices like massage can have a transformative impact on both patients and practitioners alike.

Why Massage Therapy?
In today’s fast-paced world, our bodies are often in a state of high alert, with the sympathetic nervous system constantly engaged to prepare us for stressful or emergency situations. This heightened state can lead to increased heart rate, respiration, and production of adrenal hormones, putting significant stress on our bodies.
Fortunately, a gentle massage offers a natural antidote to this constant state of tension. By stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system—the part of our nervous system responsible for promoting relaxation and reducing stress—massage helps to lower heart rate, respiration, and blood pressure, promoting a sense of calm and well-being.

In a recent 2024 analysis of over 200 studies as reported in Nature, researchers have found wide-ranging benefits that human contact can provide, from easing pain and anxiety to boosting the growth of fragile newborns.
In essence, massage therapy provides a much-needed respite from the demands of daily life, allowing us to unwind, recharge, and restore balance to both body and mind.
Swedishmassageis a classic therapeutic massage technique that focuses on relaxation and promoting overall well-being. During a Swedish massage, gentle to firm pressure is applied to the muscles, using long, gliding strokes, kneading, and circular movements to alleviate tension, improve circulation, and induce a state of deep relaxation. This type of massage is perfect for reducing stress, relieving muscle tension, and promoting a sense of tranquility and rejuvenation.
To assist in relaxing the mind and body, I typically use Lavender essential oil and a hot towel on the back and Peace & Calming essential oil on the shoulders along with the massage oil called Relaxation. I exclusively use top-quality Young Living products, carefully selected for their profound natural benefits.
